Economy of love

What is the "Economy of Love"?

Creating a better future.

The Economy of Love is a certification standard for products that are sustainable, ethical, and transparent throughout the entire supply chain. We believe that through a transparent economic system, responsible consumers and producers can actively protect nature and ensure that all people across the supply chain are fairly compensated and protected from exploitation. Economy of Love is also a community of businesses, farms, and consumers working together to create an economy based on respect and compassion for both people and nature. The Economy of Love was initiated by an organic farming association called the Egyptian Biodynamic Association (EBDA) to support sustainable farmers, businesses, and consumers.

Our Belief

Creating Balance
We define a sustainable economy as one that serves the global community in the long term. To achieve this, our perspective must be holistic. We must run businesses, but also nurture our communities through education, protect the earth and its balance, and create fair and dignified working environments. At Economy of Love, sustainability is defined as the balance between the four dimensions of society, economy, culture, and environment. Imagine a world that cares only about economic profit but gives little value to protecting the environment, people’s livelihoods, and the development of communities. Such imbalance harms people and creates an unsustainable economy that destroys nature.

We Are Since 1977!
SEKEM began by transforming untouched Egyptian desert into thriving farmland through biodynamic methods, becoming a model for sustainable agriculture. Over time, it grew into an agro-economic group with companies, NGOs, education, and healthcare, and today stands as a global leader in social business.

Inspired by this legacy, the Economy of Love (EoL) Standard was created to support farmers, promote biodiversity, ensure fair wages, and champion transparency in sustainable production.
Philosophy
“We believe in an economy that heals the earth, values people, and unites producers and consumers through trust. By nurturing soil, sequestering carbon, and embracing renewable solutions, we aim for a world that regenerates nature and fosters a fulfilling life for all.”

What is the relation between SEKEM and EoL?

One Vision for a Sustainable Future

The Economy of Love Standard was inspired by the SEKEM initiative and developed by the EBDA. Although the concept of EoL was developed by Sekem, the EBDA as an independent non profit organization is the developer and owner of the standard. After the passing of Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish, SEKEM founder, the community of SEKEM formulated a new vision for SEKEM’s upcoming 40 years until 2057. One of the Vision Goals is called “Economy of Love”. The way SEKEM was always integrating not just economical values but also social, cultural and environmental, the initiative now aims to not further grow its companies, farms and social institutions but rather transport the values that are lived and proofed in SEKEM since 40+ years to other companies, farms and initiatives around SEKEM and the globe.
